technology-a boon ar a bane

we cannot live without electricity nor can we survive the whole day without knowing whether which is the latest Gadget in use which would benefit the driver of an automobile to drive safely and at the same time work on his immediate assignment at hand. Basically, we need TECHNOLOGY and we are a big part of it already. We live, strive and thrive on computers, data base online, communication network, and the latest gadgets

Technology today has given us both Nuclear weapon and Medicines that could cure the unthinkable of pain and diseases. It has given us a better opportunity to preach and teach knowledge to those less privileged, those who cannot hear or see or speak and understand their language and be one and at the same time it has made it possible to grow in millions and preach out freedom to one.

Technology creates options. Options lead to confusion. A man getting into a crowded bus will sit on any available seat. The same man in an empty bus will wonder whether he should sit in the front or back, window or aisle….Err why I am even talking about all this. Without technology there wouldn’t be buses!!! Options besides creating confusion also create conflict. Technology creates wants, wants and more wants. The moment you satisfy few of them, many more raise their hydra head.

In conclusion, we think that Technology is a must. It’s a Boon and it will stay so forever. Without it we could not have had this debate. We would not realize that it is possible to go beyond the age of 90 and still be fit and healthy. Technology has given that to us today

I feel that technology is a bane to a certain extent as it made humans too reliant on them. Like we need computers as part of our essential needs. For some, one day without using the computer is aready torturous for them.

One of the reason why teens use them is due to gaming. For adults, they mainly use it for work. Even certain schools use them for online assignments.

Computers need energy to run and thus, we are indirectly harming the earth.

ubaidul Fikri said...

I think
we need to analyse if technology is helping us in reaching the goal or obstructing us.
technology can be good or bad depending on the user. You can use internet to browse through what you need and be benifited and at the same time you can also do things which are not good for you.

chengsiang said...

Technology has made human life nothing but busier. As technology gadgets makes people more mobile and easily to contact, working adults can be working a five day week. But on weekend, they would still have to do some things which are still related with work. Example, checking emails, prepare documents for meeting. Time for families and leisure activities are insufficient to enjoy. We are also too reliable on technology that without them, you cannot get your stuff done. I feel that we should cut down on technology used as it is not good. Even E-learning week, no laptops.

chenjuan said...

I think technology is a boon more than a bane.
Technology is a boon because it benifits human beings in many areas such as work, communication health and leisure.
But to a certain extent, technology can be a bane as it may be hazardous if terrorise use it to attack the world.

-alvin- said...

I agree with chenjuan statment. Thus, we should not be too reliant on this technology in everything.

They do harm the environment to a certain extent as they all need power to operate.

Technology will be a bane in time to come when we cannot do without it

Xavier said...

I will agree that technology is more of a boon. it helps us by improving not only our physical self, but also the physical environment. but due to humans nature, we tend to want more o something after we have gotten it, which causes deterioration to the environment. due to the increase in energies being used on humans, instead of the environment.

Xavier said...

Therefore, the laziness and self center-ness of humans should be erased within us, for a better environment, as well as, the correct usage of technology. which is to aid us in our work and have a good attitude, not allowing us to be too reliant on technology.

Xavier said...

As what alvin and CJ had said eariler, i would like to support their ideas. power is the main problem to technology. the outputs of technology is infinate, but the inputs to technology is finite. so it all boils back down to the responsibility of humans to use technology wisely.

chenjuan said...

i agree that technology really benifits the health care alot as it helps to cure many diseases and
also prolong our lifespan.

But the problem comes, if everyone live till 90 yeas old, our society will face the problem of aging population and this will slow down our economy. They will become a burden to our society

ubaidul Fikri said...

I agree to what chengjuan said. There will be an aging population in the world if the technology becomes better and better!Take for example spore, now the government is worry about the aging population here. They need to spend lots of money on buldin one room HDB flats equip with all the necessary facilities for the elderly.U all cn also see that now most of the HDB flats are undergoin upgradin such as puttin lift on every floor.

I personally feel that technology may not necessaary make life easiler. For example if a new gagets is created, people will have to go find out how that thing operate in order not to be outdated. Thus making life stressfull. Nevertheless technology have made life easiler to a certain extent. Communication is easiler due to phones. But have any one question about the radiation harm that the phone emit?

-alvin- said...

Yes phones. People are seriously taking it for granted. In singapore, almost every tennagers will have 1 handphone.

It is not a unknown fact that these phones emits radiation that harms us while we are trying to communicate in the process.

However, we are also overlooking the fact that due to this easy communication network being establish, we are arriving for appoinments later and later.

It's like with one sms or a phone call, u postpone the meeting time. This is a bad habit as you will no longer be punctual and there is no more sense of urgency in leaving the house even like 1 hour behind time

jing wei said...

Technology can be a boon and bane, it only depends on how u use it. For example with the invention of computer and the internet, we have the headache of posting our homeworks online. My eyes hurts badly just looking at the screen. But then, without computers we might be doing this in hardcopy; a waste of paper.

-alvin- said...

I agree that to a certain extent. It is not right to condemn using paper as waste. Those papers that are printed are usually single sided, and can be reused. Even if it is double sided, it's possible to find a space or two to write down some important stuffs that we need to remember like a make-up lesson date.

Also, it will be virtually impossible to solve a math question without paper using just the computer.

As for the pain caused by the screens, it can be adverted by looking away at something green every half-an-hour for around 5 minutes. Thus, you need to have self-control/discipline to do that if you know you have such problems

ubaidul Fikri said...

Talkin abt computers, i wan to hightlight abt computer games!yes computer games!

Nowadays 70% of the teenagers plays computer games.Nt only tat some even sacriface their eating, studyin n even sleepin time to play computer games. This is bad as it cn cause harm to their body.I can say computer games are very addictive jus like drug!Student spends hours in LAN shop some until they don hav money left.

jing wei said...

Ture this is one setbacks of technology. some ppl just can't find the willpower to tear their eyes from the screen, be it games or hw. Some ppl are the hardcore types who MUST finish their work or game before taking a rest. Even if they do take a rest, they will be back doing their stuff asap. In ways, this is like a test of willpower. The weak melt their eyes on the screen.

In fact right now im blinking controllablly.Bane on the eyes.Bane on health.

yes indeed technology has made our life busier, but come to think of it, if there's no technology, won't the world be a boring place?which means u have to ride a bicycle to school.
if laptops are not used, the teacher would give out infomation on papers. if theres 20,000 students ,then many trees would be cut down, thus causing even more damage is being done to the earth

jiawei said...

Indeed handouts will be given out if laptops were not invented, trees will be cutted. But trees could be grown again. Unlike fossile fuel which is non-renewable. As long as we grow back the trees we cut,the harm done to the environment will not be as bad as those done by technology. Technology uses electricty which make use of fossile fuel which is harmful to Mother Earth indirectly.

tress takes about 20-30 years to grow.and comercial loggers do not have that much time to wait for a tree to grow. thus,Indonesia has lost an estimated 72 percent of its original frontier forest
therefore, laptop should be used instead.
Alternatives energy such as the wind mill, solar power and Geothermal Energy are used instead.

Using the notebook means use electricity which is generated by oil. Obtaining oil is environmental unfriendly and it is an non-renewable natural resource. Trees however are renewable so the notebook might not be the best solution.

fairuz said...

same people giving comments - great work pple!

Some very interesting points. Again, I have to say Peiwen you have made very good analyses and arguments, and to the point!

Alvin, Jing Wei, Fikri, Jiawei and Xavier - some pertinent points but could been analysed in depth.

What about looking at history - what technology has done? Look at Columbia, radiation plant in Russia - Chernobyl, atomic bomb in Japan, even Singapore - how that affected us. What about the Sarin gas, other chemical hazards during the Iraq occupation? Guns for the people? Or simply what about the aircon - which MM Lee said at one time was the greatest invention?

Ponder about them.

yes i know that notebook uses electricty.lets say the oil will run out in 50 years time, does it mean that we will stop using notebook? thats why technology is constantly improving.salor panels, windmills, hydroplant are all invented to produce electricity.

David said...

in reply jingwei's eye comment

so you are saying us human are stupid?? computer screen can be adjusted.. the reason for the painfulness in the eye is cause of the brightness of the screen you yourself set it.. when your eye start to tear is because your eye can adapt to the level of brightness.. can't you adjust it dimmer?? you can't judge that technology is bane because it makes people's eye teary.. actually technology came in handy in this way.. it makes the screen able to adjustable to different level of brightness that suits your eye.. this is a boon in fact the dimmer it is.. the smaller amount of radar is being transmitted and harm your health..

David said...

sry ar... edit on mi last post... "when your eye start to tear is because your eye can adapt to the level of brightness.. should be can't adapt and not can adapt..

technology is a boon when it helps you to get things done in a faster and better way.. nothing is perfect, even no matter how good technology is, theres' always cons.. a best example is a passenger in a taxi using notebook. yes, in real world he is in the taxi but in the technology world, he is somewhere else.. like we always say, the body is there but not the soul.. if another passenger was in the taxi not using a notebook, he or she maybe chatting with the driver. even its a short conversation, it will gain something.. its that little thing we knew and learned everyday that makes us what we are tomorrow..

Peiwen said...

Muneer said,"yes i know that notebook uses electricty.lets say the oil will run out in 50 years time, does it mean that we will stop using notebook?" No. We will still use the notebook because it is essential. But technology has its limits.

Solar panel- Useless in the dark

Windmills- Require windy areas which requires lots of large open spaces.

Hydro electricity plant- Limited to certain countries.

-alvin- said...

yes i agree with peiwen.

However, using a combination of these 3 methods, we are able to lower our power usage. making the oil we have last longer

fairuz said...

Who is 1b21 group 4?

Good point Pei Wen! Good use of examples/facts and analysis.

MUNEER said...

solar panel absorbs energy during the day and uses that stored energy in the night. its doesnt need a continous source of energy.

Unknown said...

so are we going to say that we dont use notebook.. its not only notebook that give problems mentioned above.. but mostly other technolody devices are also giving the same problems. what's the point of arguing. say so much but still we need to use this technologies.. its not about working on the problems but on the solutions.. the solutions that can make these problems better than it was.

-alvin- said...

yes i agree with muneer. These solar panels, hydro and windmills technology are not built to fully take over our power generator.

They are used to lower the need of a power generator, and harm the earth lesser.

One example is a parking charges stand. In the day the solar panel absorbs the sun's energy and stores it. People do not need any light to see the stand in the day.
At night, the battery power is used to power the bulbs so people can see it in the dark.

If all the stands are using this technology, we will save and they might be our only source of light out there in the open if there is a power failure in the area.

Thus, althought technology might harm the environment, it also helps us to reduce though limited.

For this topic, I agree with Xavier.

Technology itself is a boon, but it was human greed that makes it bane.

If every body would be content with one’s lot, there would not be so many factories which produce the same product, and there will be no such things as competition among industries. Competition among industries is war; innocent raw materials were the victims while consumers were the “flags of the father”. For certain reasons, technology and environment were inter-linked with one another, and worst still, in a reversely proportional way; the more advance the technology, the deeper the environment is damaged, but what worth worrying is, the situation will always not be the other way round (technology down, environment up). Mother Nature is moaning with pain, to us……

NUBE said...

Technology in the form of computer is a ubiquitous feature of modern life. Whether it is at a restaurant paying the bill or going to the Automated Teller Machine to withdraw money, we see the presence of computers.

Yes, I agree that the benefits of the computer cannot be disputed, and it is useful because it offers us a window to the world. However, there were always tiny little flaw in every diamond, and weak point in every considered “real-blessing” stuff. What I mean was the invention of some really unnecessary commercial product, and so called “educational material”.

Everyone has there own dislike over the technology (as what I had mentioned in the last paragraph), and for me, it is AUTO Computer Aided Design & Drafting (Auto CADD). Why do I say so? Because, I can simply take a piece of blank paper with the aid of a pencil and sometimes an eraser, and begin to draw any circuit I desire within half the amount of time I spent using Auto CADD, drawing the same thing! Why shall I spend money to buy the software to stress myself with the redundant commands when I can draw faster and better using pencil? Why shall I waste electricity and precious youth time to press “Z”, “ENTER”, “A”, “ENTER” again and again and again?

That is what I think made technology a bane. I agree that technology do benefit us, but DEFINITELY NOT IN SUCH A WAY! When a module like this is being introduced to Polytechnics, how many electricity, time and money would be wasted? Is this a boon or a bane? Different people will have different views. I dare not say that mine is a hundred percent correct, but it is at least the bane of technology faced by me.

Unknown said...

why dont we put it in this way..
when technology gives a help to our daily lifestyle, it is good..
but on the other hand, causing problems that too give us headache.
different people got different point of view, its just how are we going to tackle on the problem that is facing.

THREE IN A ROW AGAIN! WAHOO~~ SAY SAY SAY~~

Technology is a two-edged sword, one side is to hurt enermy (boon) and the other injured ourself (bane). It is never fair to say that technology is either a boon or a bane as it brings benefits and problems to all of us.

I would say that technology is a drug, and we are addicted. We cannot live nor do anything any longer without technology. Comparing living longer without technology and shorter life span with technology everywhere, what will you choose? I bet that majority will not go for the simple life. Once you tried technology once, you are fascinated by the convenience of it, there is no way one can reject it by any means; because technology means lots of tears and blood retained and litres of sweat were saved (without reference to Auto CADD), no body would like to choose things to do on the hard way.

Nevertheless, technology is advancing at a tremendous pace, and it means that information will be outdated really fast. So if one were not able to keep pace with the latest technology, they will be disqualified by society without a shadow of a doubt.

Hence, is technology still a boon?

Yes and no.

Yes for it kept us warm under harsh condition, saved us lots of time (without reference to Auto CADD), made things convenient for us (but not so for engineers who study electrical components), made our life more enjoyable and relax, provide us with quality vegetables, solved many problems for Singapore (eg. the extension of land, new water and many more), improving machines that can serve us better and many other more.

No for it destroy many natural habitats during gathering of resources, have to work harder as more advance technology means services provided must be of a higher standard, people will be outdated easier when ignoring the television for too long, main cause of many natural disasters nowadays, lesser personal communication due to invention of handphones and emails, the use of nuclear weapons in war and many other more.

In conclusion, there were too many factors for us to weigh and measure; but what if technology really is a bane? Will we not depend on it anymore? Technology is part of us; we cannot be separated till the moment we no longer breath in and out.

Unknown said...

i agree with andy.
technology have become apart of our daily lives. it is true that many pollution problems is due to technology , however as seen on news lately many countries are striving to cause lesser pollution by using alternative sources for the use of technology. technology have also be a boon in trying to make its bane a boon. thus as my first post said ,technology is a boon and a bane ,depending on how it is use.

Unknown said...

(k last post for this blog kampai!!!!)

andy u said that tecnology is like a drug and is addictive. i dissagree with your point. people are more reliant than addicted to it.however the government are trying to solve the problem of people being tooreliant to technology. in secondary sch CCA are also created for another reason, to make the students remember not to be too reliant on technology(ncc, nppcc, OBS, mount ophir expeition etc.].also, more and more shows on television are telling people to be more less reliant on technology directly and indirectly(commercial, captian planet (a very...old cartoon)).

Perharps. one day we could fusion something too. ha ha. out of things to comment about.
